Seascape Photography | Saltwick Bay

Location: Saltwick Bay, Whitby, North Yorkshire

After an early start at Saltburn (see previous post), Tim & I headed down the coast for a hearty breakfast in Whitby. After a good feed we made our way down to Saltwick Bay to wait for the tide to go out far enough for us to climb over the rocks on the beach and reach the wreck of the Admiral van Tromp, a trawler which ran aground close to Black Nab in October 1976 with the loss of 2 crew members.

The wreck is well known to keen photographers as being a great subject, with the twisted metal of the wreck and Black Nab looming behind, it is incredibly atmospheric.

Seascape Photography | Saltburn-by-the-Sea

Location: Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire

This was a trip I'd been planning with Tim Bailey for ages. Last time we got out to take some early morning seascapes was 2 years ago at Boggle Hole so we were well over-due for another excursion.

Tim picked me up at 4:30am to ensure that we'd make the 1.5 hour journey in time for sunrise. We arrived at 6:00am, which gave us plenty of time to have a look round and find some prime positions before the 'golden hour' before sunrise. High tide was at 7:30am so we weren't in any danger of getting stranded anywhere, although I did get my feet wet a couple of times.
We were disappointed to see that the classic view of the pier from high up on the headland has now been obscured by some new unsightly buildings on the front (having hauled our kit up umpteen steps). What were the council thinking of when they granted planning permission for them?
The weather wasn't ideal but at least it was dry and not particularly cold and I was very pleased with the results.
By the way, the red glow in the sky in the 1st shot is the steel works at Redcar which has only this week been earmarked for closure, which will obviously have a massive impact on the local area.
